I have never played the first two games in the series but I did go on to get number four (Dark Conflict) on release. In one battle I was fighting three other factions and about halfway through the battle I found myself defending the enemy forces in the west because they were inadvertently keeping another enemy force in the south away from my borders. What impresses me most is how deceptively deep the strategy is. You can create whatever vehicles you want and go anywhere you like. It’s so addictive and the freedom you are given makes it great fun. Eventually my love of all things tactical persuaded me to get it and I have never looked back. It looked blocky and boring and the manga style presentation put me off. I was aware of the favourable reviews of this game in particular, and the series in general, but I was initially reluctant to buy it. There are four games in the series and I started with number three: Dual Strike. It also happens to be a turn-based classic called Advance Wars. My favourite game is a portable, which means I can keep it forever without taking up a lot of space and take it with me wherever I go. GC: Believe it or not either Super Mario Galaxy 2 or TIE Fighter. PS: What would GC’s response to this Hot Topic be? The fact is has been my favourite for so long suggests it might never be beaten, but I constantly hope it is, because that means I’ll have played something even better! Get yourself a decent joystick and go for it! For anyone who’s never played it though, there’s no excuse. I haven’t actually bought them yet, as I know that if I did they would just take over my life again, and I’m not sure I can afford that now in the same way I could over school summer holidays. I spent quite a bit of time last year trying to get it working again with no luck, but then it (and X-Wing and X-Wing Alliance, both of which are good but not in the same league as TIE Fighter) was released on GOG. There are so many amazing story and emergent moments – betrayals, surprises, being outnumbered 36 to 1 but laughing at those odds because you’re in a TIE Defender, flying alongside Darth Vader (‘Although you are nominally squadron leader, do not issue any flight orders to Lord Vader’). I’ve played through it several times now and seem to get more out of it each time. The Star Wars licence is the icing on the cake. But that’s part of the reason I love it, it really feels like you’re piloting a space fighter. It uses almost every button on the keyboard, including shift and alt modifiers and requires a joystick to play properly. It’s the sort of game that would never be made nowadays complex, complicated, and surprisingly difficult in places. My favourite game of all time has been the same for nigh on twenty years now: TIE Fighter.
